An artist blacksmith has returned to Hereford College of Arts (HCA) for a masterclass on sustainable mobile forges.

Lisa Wisdom, a former HCA student, forged connections between The Cart Shed Charity and the art college on an environmental project building the forges using off-the-shelf items like steel pipes and plumbing rod.

This was part of an initiative to reduce fossil fuel usage in the forging process.

Ms Wisdom, influenced by historical practices where charcoal was the main forging fuel, said she developed the practical forge idea to boost her practice's environmental credentials.

HCA students are now learning how to create these transportable and cost-effective forges for their use.

The college also plans to use them for outreach programmes in schools and community events.

From December, HCA students will run workshops in The Cart Shed’s woods, offering 10 to 25-year-olds a chance to try their hand at forging.

An exhibition and have a go workshops are scheduled for the weekend of January 23 to 25 at The Green Dragon Hotel in Hereford.

The project received £9,987.50 from the UK government via the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
