WEEKS of absolute chaos look set to hit Hereford through the summer. Months of gas works are coming to the A49 to the south of the city.

We all know that it only takes the smallest of incidents to bring the city to its knees, with total gridlock on the roads, so just how are we going to manage this?

The A49 is the artery into Hereford, and all that traffic has to go somewhere. Whatever the official diversions, at peak times I suspect it’s going to be traffic chaos in the city. What a shame we do not have an alternative river crossing, a bypass, or even a park and ride service!

While the roads are often jammed, it is at times like this that Hereford’s traffic problems really come to the fore. We are lacking so much vital infrastructure that any self-respecting city, or even town, should have had years ago.

Plenty of money has been spent over the years, by various council administrations, on a raft of work ‘improvements’. Some of them have flopped catastrophically, such as the short-lived cycle lanes in Commercial Road, others have been just a bit baffling, such as the city link road, which should be paved in gold for what it cost! But what has never happened is a real solution for stopping traffic entering the city.

This seems like madness to me, as we all know that there is a major problem with traffic in the city. A simple lane closure on Greyfriars Bridge can throw things into chaos at rush hour, with traffic quickly backing up past the Starting Gate roundabout on the other side of Hereford and over Aylestone Hill on another. The A465, too, has its fair share of problems already.

Good luck to all of the commuters facing almost three months of traffic chaos. I think I’ll be avoiding the city entirely.
