A CLOSED pub building has been boarded up by police after concerns were raised by neighbours.

Runcorn residents living near Union Tavern highlighted to Cheshire Police how the venue is becoming a target for vandals.

Landlords announced ‘with a sad heart’ in February that the pub was to close due to rising costs.

In a statement, they said it had become ‘not sustainable financially to run’, and they thanked customers for their trade.

Following reports of anti-social behaviour and criminal damage at the site, officers have visited and work has been carried out to make it more secure.

Police community support officers also spoke to residents to understand their other policing priorities.

The force’s Halton Brook Police team said: “A great result for residents of Malcolm Street and Union Street.

“The beat team was contacted regarding persistent anti-social behaviour and criminal damage at the vacant Union Tavern.

“Following our intervention the location has now been fully secured.”

Officers added: “The beat team completed a beat walkabout with Riverside housing this morning.

“We looked at several areas of concern, and it was a good opportunity to share information and ideas about improving the area.”
