WORK is to start soon to improvement the streets and pavements of a Herefordshire town.

High Street, Iron Cross, Victoria Street and Corn Street will all be spruced up from Tuesday, May 7. 

This includes enhanced surfacing, improved paving, wider pavements and raised tables at the major junctions making it safer and more accessible for pedestrians. The paving in Corn Square will also be refurbished, with improvements to the road and parking area.

The first stage of work, however, is to remove two trees from Corn Square to make way for new trees and seating. This will take place from this Saturday (April 20). 

The robinia will be moved to Sydonia Park (if possible), however the cherry tree has been found to be near the end of its natural life due to constrained growth so will be removed. The replacement planting will include other suitable trees together with other native plants for seasonal interest and habitat.

The improvement work to the paving, road surfacing, seating and planting will start following the Leominster May Fair and is expected to be completed in September. All areas will remain open to pedestrians during the work, however there will be road closures in place. 

Councillor Philip Price, cabinet member for infrastructure and transport, said: “This major investment in Leominster town centre will help breathe new life into the historic high street and Corn Square. It will certainly contribute towards restoring the distinctive character of Leominster, enhancing the town for visitors and retailers.”

The improvements are part of the Leominster High Street Heritage Action Zone funded work – a multi-million pound regeneration initiative supported by Historic England, delivered through Herefordshire Council and Leominster Town Council.
