FOLLOWING on from Gavin McEwan’s excellent report regarding the reintroduction of a western bypass, I have other questions and opinions which soon-to-be voters might like to also consider (Revived western bypass: what are the pros and cons? April 4).

Namely, given the historical importance of the A49, why was such a bypass not constructed decades ago when other bottlenecks between Hereford and Preston were being eliminated and other sections improved?

Was it because of political incompetence or political indifference? Or perhaps a bit of both with a succession of local MPs failing to press their party hard enough to get a Hereford bypass constructed.

Did they all let other non-constituency work interfere with their duty (if such exists) to the welfare of their constituents?

Were Hereford voters taken for granted, being part of a rock-solid blue wall, with money best spent elsewhere?
