SHEEP were evacuated as a fire gripped a Herefordshire farm building.

Fire crews from Ewyas Harold, Eardisley and Peterchurch, plus the water carriers from Leominster and Peterchurch, were called to Preston-on-Wye at 5.15pm yesterday (March 21).

The fire involved an agricultural building, with vehicles well alight.

"Forty sheep had been evacuated by the farmer before the arrival of the fire service and more animals were moved to a place of safety by the farmer and fire service personnel," said a spokesperson for Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service.

"The fire was fought using four hose reel jets augmented by the water carrier.

"Drag hooks were used and electrics were isolated."

The spokesperson added that all of the farm machinery was affected by the fire and 50 percent of the barn. No other emergency services attended, with fire crews leaving the scene shortly after 8.05pm.
