THE Environment Agency has warned that "flooding of roads and farmland is expected" in Herefordshire as more rain is forecast for this week.

The agency has issued flood alerts for the rivers Wye and Lugg.

The alert for the Wye says: "River levels are rising at the Old Wye Bridge as a result of rainfall. Flooding of roads and farms is expected to continue today, February 7.

"Flooding may affect the river Wye from Hay to Ross, including Byford, Bredwardine and Hereford. 

"Further rainfall is forecast. We are monitoring the situation. Please avoid using low-lying footpaths near local watercourses and plan driving routes to avoid roads near rivers."

Meanwhile, the alert for the Lugg says: "River levels continue to rise following recent heavy rainfall. Flooding of roads and farmland is imminent. We expect flooding to affect low-lying land and roads. 

"We expect river levels to remain high for several days. Further rainfall is forecast. We are monitoring the situation. Please avoid using low-lying footpaths near local watercourses and plan driving routes to avoid roads near rivers."

The Environment Agency advises that people keep up to date with the latest flood risks by calling Flood Line on 0345 988 1188.

It also suggests keeping a bag ready with vital items like medication in case you need to leave your home, checking you know how to turn off your gas, electricity and mains supplies, and plan how you will go about moving your family and pets to safety should you need to.

The forecast, according to the Met Office, for the rest of this week, is for rain on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
