THE aviary may no longer be there, but a Hereford pub is still proving to be popular among locals after a new landlord took it on.

The Golden Lion in Grandstand Road, in the Widemarsh area of the city, was renowned for housing a cockatiel in its backyard.

Named Magic, the bird grabbed national attention back in 2011 when the pub was said to be the home of Wacaday's feathered friend, made famous by television presenter Timmy Mallett.

However, landlady Paula Watson discounted the rumour, insisting that while Magic looked similar, it was not him.

Mrs Watson has now left the pub after serving behind the bar for many years, with Magic also going with her.

The Golden Lion is now run by Cliff Roberts, who took it on last September.

Skittles is still played there, while you can play pool for free every Wednesday.

"I've been drinking here for 23 years," said Mr Roberts.

"I met the locals and got on well with them so I continued coming.

"All of the customers here are friends and we've been on holidays together."
