A BURST water main near a busy Hereford roundabout was caused by a third party, Welsh Water has confirmed.

Water was seen fountaining out of a pit dug beside Roman Road, near the Starting Gate pub, yesterday (December 11).

It resulted in a large puddle on the road, with plenty of spray as vehicles went past.

Homes were temporarily left without water as engineers tried to fix the problem.

A Welsh Water spokesperson said: "Our crews worked hard last night to repair a water main on Roman Road in Hereford after damage was caused by a third party.

“While the repair took place some properties may have experienced a short-term interruption of water supply or experienced low pressure, this was to allow us to complete the repair safely.

“We would like to apologise for any inconvenience while we repaired the damaged pipe.”

Works to lay high voltage cables have been taking place in the area, which is set to continue near the Starting Gate roundabout until next Tuesday (December 19).

Four-way traffic lights have been in operation, with work taking place overnight.

Further work will continue from Tuesday, January 2, until Sunday, January 7, where there will be an eastbound lane closure on Roman Road from the Starting Gate roundabout to Attwood Lane.

A spokesperson for National Grid said: "We are aware of an incident involving a water leak near the starting gate roundabout. Contractors carrying out work on our behalf have been working in the area.

"Investigations are currently ongoing into the cause of the burst main so we are unable to provide any further details at this stage."
