STEPHEN West Oram once again aims his guns at the Green Party and Dr Ellie Chowns, who will stand for her party at the forthcoming general election (Letters, November 23).

He shares with readers a short and scary impact analysis suggesting a countryside entirely populated with wind pumps and hordes of unskilled, low-paid, manual labourers to work by hand after fossil-fuelled machinery is banned. Farmers, he implies, will be worst hit.

The prospect of a Green Party government puts the wind up many voters. Yet major climate-related disasters across the world in recent times will doubtless reoccur, and at some future time include catastrophic events in north-west Europe: we mostly trust that science will eventually provide solutions. Some will need to be big!

Great endeavours must be orchestrated and deployed by competent governments. When that eventually happens, the Green Party’s prioritisation on climate matters and their effects will serve us well. Let’s expect that this next government strives to capture the best ideas and practice effective policies, especially through parliamentary members with access to required skills, knowledge, and experience – like Dr Ellie Chowns.
