FAR from being a fossil fool, as Dr Ellie Chowns suggests might be the King’s opinion (Letters, November 16), Rishi Sunak, in permitting new oil and gas licences, has displayed exemplary common sense and acted in the UK’s best interests.
Due the intermittency of wind and solar energy production, the difficulty of storing electricity, and the timescales required to upgrade our electricity production and transmission capacities, it is clear that we will need oil and gas for many years to come.

It is wise to encourage investment in our own resources, thereby boosting energy security, protecting jobs and generating tax revenues which can help finance green initiatives.
Rishi Sunak’s actions demonstrate a determination to chart a course to net zero which best protects UK citizens from the significant costs of the transition. The Green Party seems to exhibit no such concern. It is high time that they replaced slogans and sound bites with detailed and costed plans and levelled as to the costs that the Green Party wishes us to bear and the sacrifices that it wishes us to make.
