THOUSANDS of people had a surprise today (November 19) as a music star made a special appearance during Hereford's Christmas lights switch-on event.

Rick Astley, who had one of the biggest hits in the 1980s with Never Gonna Give You Up, appeared via video link to count down the clock as the lights were switched on in the city centre.

It was reported that 4,000 people watched the event - the biggest ever!

The lights were switched on shortly after 5pm, with streets such as High Town, Eign Gate, Broad Street and Widemarsh Street all lit up. Decorations in the Old Market also came on at the same time.
