Three local motorcyclists have completed the journey of a lifetime after becoming the sole UK team to complete the International Six Day Enduro in Argentina.
Rhys Evans, Neil Hawer and Jack Probert endured temperatures of over 40 degrees as they carried out the challenges some 7,000 miles away from home.
“We made it,” commented a delighted team manager Meirion Scourfield from Llechryd, near Cardigan.
“We came 17th in the team clubs, which is the best we’ve ever done. But that’s insignificant to where we were a few days before we flew out.
“Some days we were hanging on by a thread but we pulled out an amazing result despite all the challenges and for me, it has to be one of my proudest moments to have managed this small team and achieved so much.”
The three riders are all members of the Lampeter-based Dyfed Dirt Bike Club which has active members from throughout Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion.
The gruelling six day off-road event was made even harder this year with temperatures hitting over 40 degrees. A number of riders were forced to retire as a result of the but the local boys refused to give in.
But halfway through, things nearly came to an end for Jack Probert when the battery on his bike gave up after not charging.
Team manager Meirion Scourfield made a phone call to Yamaha expert Dylan Jones, Llanidloes, for repair advice and Scourfield managed to source a replacement battery from a retired bike from the British Vase team to keep Jack in the running. More batteries were required to deal with the demands of the rough terrain change and despite the difficulties, Jack was able to complete his first ISDE.
With the last of the biggest loops finished on Friday it was only the Saturday Motocross test left to run. All three riders managed the day perfectly and gave the DDBC their best team result to date. The team reached a 17th overall position against clubs that had attended from all over the world.
