A Herefordshire village is finally getting a new community centre and village green.

Marden parish council applied back in March 2020 to permit the new facility, on the northwest corner of a field to the south of the village between the primary school and New House Farm.

A planned new 90-home estate on the rest of the site was given outline permission in 2017.

The planned 335-square-metre, L-shaped building will house two community rooms separated by a folding partition, an entrance lobby and lounge, a meeting space and a kitchen.

To the west, a new village green will be linked by footpaths the school and surrounding residential areas. An open grassed area will be used for sports and events, while areas around the edge are “for future development and planting by the community”, the planning application said.

There will be 19 parking spaces to the south and east of the building. Road access will be from the housing estate rather than directly off the main road through the village.

Planning officer Ollie Jones concluded that “while arguably not of outstanding architectural merit”, the building “is a relatively attractive and well-proportioned response to the need for a purpose-built, modern building to serve Marden and the wider rural community”.
