A FARMER from Herefordshire has been awarded the title of Farmers' Weekly Agricultural Student of the Year, seeing off competition from other students around the UK.

Harry Davies, 22, of Hopes Ash farm near Ross-on-Wye in Herefordshire, received the award after his success as a student at Harper Adams University and on a placement in western Australia.

Mr Davies now has plans to complete more qualifications and hopes to be more involved with the National Farmers' Union and Arla, as well as bringing his skills to his family's Herefordshire farm.

He told the Hereford Times: "I am proud to be one of three Herefordshire farmers with an award which in itself demonstrates the strength of the industry within the county."

"His passion and enthusiasm for agriculture is infectious," said the judges for the award, which was sponsored by Lightsource.

Dr Russell Readman, course manager for agriculture at Harper Adams, said he was proud of Mr Davies for winning the award.
