A YELLOW weather warning for thunderstorms is set to come into force across the county.

It will be active on Friday August 18 from 6am until 12pm in Herefordshire.

The thunderstorms are expected to develop during Friday morning with heavy rain and lightning.

Hereford Times:

"There is a good chance driving conditions will be affected by spray, standing water, leading to longer journey times by car and bus," weather forecasters said.

There is also a chance of a few homes and businesses being flooded, leading to damage.

The wet weather could also see a few buildings and structures damaged by lightning, as well as power cuts. Delays to trains are also possible.

Temperatures will remain around 20C.

The warning covers most of the midlands, plus all of south-east England and some of the south-west.

Herefordshire Council has said those impacted by floods must put their safety first and dial 999 if they or somebody else are in immediate danger.

People are urged to keep an eye on weather updates to ensure their safety.

Dan Stroud, meteorologist for the Met Office, said: “On Friday lower pressure will move in bringing heavy showers and potentially thundery showers, then it will sweep right the way across the whole country until the early hours of Saturday morning.

“Once we get those storms out of the way, it looks as if it’s going to be quietening down, sunshine and showers over the weekend and temperatures in mid 20s, scraping into high 20s in some spots.

“There are signals for higher pressure building in the early part of next week in the south, how far north it will go is debatable.

“It’s going to remain generally changeable, temperatures will be creeping up, most likely late 20s, with an outside chance of early 30s.

“It will be generally above average temperature for the time of year as we move towards the closing days of the month, but there are signals that it will become more unsettled as we head into the first week of September.”
