A DRINK-DRIVER was over twice the limit when caught on the A4103 Hereford to Worcester road.

Harvey Jones, aged 19, from Ocle Pychard, was driving a Volkswagen Polo at around 3am on June 22 when he crashed his car.

"He attended a nearby address to say he had crashed his car," said Tom Wickstead, prosecuting at Hereford Magistrates Court.

"Police attended and found Mr Jones had left the scene and gone to his grandparents.

"Mr Jones stepped out of the rear of the vehicle and provided a sample to the police. The roadside test was 95mg per 100ml in breath.

"Mr Jones was taken to custody and a second breath sample showed 88mg."

Mr Wickstead added that Jones was previously disqualified from driving on October 26, 2021 for another excess alcohol offence.

In defence, Marilena Di Vitantonio explained that Jones crashed his car into a hedge.

"He has written a letter to the court which gives an account of why he drove on that night," said Ms Di Vitantonio.

"He stupidly made a decision to get into the car. It was a single vehicle collision, no other vehicles were involved.

"That is not an excuse, just an explanation, and he is extremely ashamed of his actions."

Magistrates disqualified Jones from driving for three years, which will be reduced by 36 weeks if he successfully completes a drink-drive rehabilitation course.

He was also fined £80 and told to pay court costs of £135 and a £32 victim surcharge respectively.
