AURA has revealed details of a returning free scheme for children in Flintshire this August.

'Fit and Fed' is a nationwide campaign that seeks to promote change in the lives of young people and create opportunities.

The programme gives children and young people the opportunity to take part in fun physical activity and enjoy nutritious, healthy meals during the school holidays, tackling three key challenges for families living in underserved communities: food poverty, isolation, and inactivity.

Fit and Fed seeks to plug the gap for families facing hardship in school holidays when facing issues such as food and child care costs amid the cost-of-living crisis.

Since the scheme began in 2016, the campaign has benefited 66,198 children/young people with 528,582 free meals being provided.

The free sessions which will seek to engage children in sporting activities, reading, and crafts across Flintshire.

The sessions are free of charge with no booking required - any child can turn up.

A spokesperson for Aura said: "In recent years, the Sports Development has taken part in a nationwide campaign called ‘Fit and Fed’, created by StreetGames, a UK-wide organisation that uses sport to create positive change in the lives of disadvantaged young people.

"The aim of Fit and Fed is to create opportunities for physical activity, and promote a healthy diet by providing healthy snacks at the end of each session.

"Aura colleagues decided to add an additional library element to the sessions which focuses upon reading and creativity, forming ‘Fit, Fed & Read’. Combining library and leisure activities together, the sessions ultimately aim to emphasise the importance of keeping minds, as well as bodies, healthy."

A similar scheme ran last year, and the positive effects upon young people in the area was profound with over 200 children signing up to Aura's summer reading challenge through these outdoor sessions rather than through the means of a library.
