FIREFIGHTERS rushed to a Hereford street as a fire took hold in two houses.

Crews from Hereford were called to reports of a garden fence on fire in Wyedean Rise in Belmont at 2.30pm yesterday (May 29).

But when they arrived on scene, a spokesperson for Hereford fire station said, it was clear that the fire had spread to two houses in the cul-de-sac, with the roof spaces "well alight".

Immediate assistance was called to the scene, with six engines sent to battle the blaze.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used hose reel jets attacked the blaze from inside the homes, while crews set up covering jets outside to suppress the flames.

Further crews were sent from Ewyas Harold, Leominster, Ross and Whitchurch, aerial ladder platform from Worcester as well as the Incident Command Unit from Ledbury.

Once the fire was extinguished, crews then pitched ladders and removed roof tiles to expose and deal with the remaining embers.

"Unfortunately both properties suffered severe fire damage," the spokesperson said.

A spokesperson for Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service said a male casualty in his 40s was handed into the care of the ambulance service while the police attended for traffic management.

A fire investigation got underway last night to fully determine the cause of the fire, while relief crews from Peterchurch and Fownhope were brought in to damp down and maintain a watching brief.

A reinspection took place at 6.45am on May and a crew remains on scene.
