Your ‘nearly 60 per cent’ figure is of a 30 per cent turnout.

I would like to know your democracy reporter’s analysis of the low poll and the variety of confusing groupings or indeed no allegiance.

I congratulate our elected councillors. I trust they will serve their local communities, free of the burden of impartiality. Councillors should be able to face opposing views with counter-proposals.

The previous council had to deal with unique crisis conditions, whilst dealing with inherited problems of longstanding maladministration. It was an awesome task.

They appointed an independent leader and I witnessed respectful relationships resulting in much consensus in committees.

They have faced damning reports and achieved much. We need action for a second river crossing now. The ‘new’ bridge was not made to last like the old one has.

I cherish the spirit that seeks solutions to problems. May our new council unite, combine with all our voluntary efforts and reach out to those presently excluded. The Stronger Town projects recognise the immediate need for regeneration. Learning from the past to work for a better future necessitates facing problems inclusively.
