Herefordshire’s nine-strong Green group say they are "deeply disappointed" that the Liberal Democrats’ refusal to work with them enabled the Conservatives to form a minority administration to run the county yesterday (May 20).

The move follows inconclusive elections in Herefordshire on May 4 which left the Conservatives the largest party in the county but short of a majority on the 53-seat council, and unable to garner support from other parties.

In the wake of this the Greens and Independents for Herefordshire, which previously jointly ran the county, sought to work with the LibDems, whose 12 seats would have yielded a bare 27-seat majority.

To meet LibDems' demands, they proposed a transition to a committee system of decision-making in which power would be shared between all groups, under a transitional "cabinet of all the talents".

"It is deeply disappointing that the Lib Dems have simply refused to cooperate with other groups, and that the only proposal they made was for Lib Dems to hold all of the power - a clearly undemocratic suggestion," the Greens have now said.

"The public want a variety of political voices to run the council. But the Liberal Democrats abstained to ensure that Conservative councillors will run the our county."

The party is now "deeply worried about the damage that this Conservative administration may do", they added.
