THE majority of parents in the county have been offered their preferred primary school for their children.

Herefordshire Council say that a total of 1,655 places have been offered, with 1,597 (96.5 per cent) of parents getting their first choice.

A further 39 offers (2.3 per cent) have got their second preference, while eight offers (0.5 per cent) have gone to the third choice. That gives a cumulative success rate of 99.3 per cent.

The council add that the balance of places offered, which is 11 (0.7 per cent) were to parents whose preferences could not be met and their offer was for the nearest school to their home address with available spaces from September.

Last year, 95 per cent of parents received their first school preference, and 98.8 per cent a place on one of their three preferences.

"As in previous years, Herefordshire schools continue to be a net importer of pupils, with more pupils from neighbouring counties requesting places in the county’s schools than Herefordshire pupils requesting places in other counties," said a Herefordshire Council spokesperson.

"There are currently 13 Herefordshire primary schools with waiting lists and 61 have available spaces.

"The council has continued to promote its online application service this year, which was used by 98 per cent of applicants."
