THREE people from Herefordshire have been to Westminster Abbey for a special carol services, including a dedicated man who organises funerals for SAS veterans.

The King and Queen Consort, the Prince and Princess of Wales, and other Members of the Royal Family attended the Together At Christmas carol service at Westminster Abbey on December 15.

The service will be broadcast on ITV on Saturday, December 24 as part of a special programme entitled Royal Carols: Together At Christmas.

Guest nominations have been drawn from Lieutenancies from across the UK, and over 100 charities associated with Members of the Royal Family, including some of the patronages of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

From Herefordshire, Barbara and David Newton were in attendance.

For more than 25 years Barbara and David have provided support for veterans in the county, most particularly and appropriately gathering and delivering Christmas hampers through SSAFA, Kensington Palace said.

Beforehand, Barbara worked as a SSAFA case-worker.

Mike Rowlatt, also from Herefordshire, was also there.

The Palace said he organises weekly Regimental (SAS) Association meetings for pensioners.

He organises veteran funeral services and visits widows. He has run his local SSAFA branch (Herefordshire) and has organised countless charitable carol services.

Spearheaded by The Princess of Wales, and supported by The Royal Foundation, the service recognises the selfless efforts of individuals, families and communities across the UK, and celebrate and showcase the joy that human connection and togetherness can bring.

This year’s carol service was dedicated to Queen Elizabeth II and the values she demonstrated throughout her life, including duty, empathy, faith, service, kindness, compassion and support for others.

These principles are shared and personified by the inspirational guests who have been invited to the Abbey in recognition of their tireless work to help and care for those around them.

Combining traditional and modern elements to encompass people of all faiths and none, the service saw the world-renowned Westminster Abbey choir perform some of the nation’s most beloved carols, including O Come, All Ye Faithful, which was selected through a public poll last week.

The carols sat alongside musical performances by guests including Craig David, Alexis Ffrench and Samantha Barks, and a special duet from Alfie Boe and Melanie C.

Poignant readings will be delivered by speakers including The Prince of Wales, Dame Kristin Scott Thomas, Hugh Bonneville and Kadeena Cox.

The broadcast will feature additional content including an introduction from The Princess of Wales, films highlighting individuals who go above and beyond to support others, and tributes to Queen Elizabeth II.
