A FORMER headteacher led the countdown to turn on the Christmas lights in one Herefordshire town.

Former Kington Primary School headteacher Anne Phillips, who retired in the summer after 22 years as head at the school took to the stage on November 1 to turn on Kington's festive display, organised by Kington Town Council and Kington Chamber of Trade.

Local Andy Compton said a large crowd gathered in the town to celebrate the event, which included entertainment from the Kington Community Choir and Ludlow Concert Band, Santa for the excited children and a festive drink for the adults.

Other attractions included pizzas provided by M and S wood fired pizza in Cloud Nine Health and Leisure Club and Border Bean mince pies.
