Pupils arrive at a ‘good’ school each morning ‘excited and ready to learn’, Ofsted has found following a visit to a Blackburn primary school.

St Mary’s and St Joseph’s Roman Catholic Primary School in Bennington Street, has been rated ‘good’ in its most recent inspection by Ofsted.

Inspectors said pupils are ‘very happy at the school’ and they arrive each morning ‘excited and ready to learn’.

The report reads: “Staff have strong relationships with pupils. Pupils feel listened to and safe.

“They told inspectors that incidents of bullying are rare.

“Staff deal with such incidents quickly and successfully.”

Most pupils achieve well due to the high expectations of leaders of all pupils, including those with SEND, and good behaviour in lessons.

All pupils feel valued and diversity is celebrated, with the children being respectful of differences.

The report continues: “Pupils warmly welcome others and ensure that everyone is treated equally.

“Leaders’ ‘SPIRIT’ values of skills for life, participation, innovation, roles and responsibilities, independence and taking risks are brought to life by pupils.

“Pupils understand these values and follow them with pride.”

The school has a ‘broad and ambitious’ curriculum and have thought about how it can meets the needs of all pupils.

Inspectors said that teachers have a secure knowledge of the subjects that they teach but in a minority of subjects, teachers are ‘less skilled in using assessment strategies to check that pupils are learning all that they should’.

The report adds: “At times, this hinders pupils from building secure knowledge over time in these subjects.”

The school is well led and managed, with leaders and governors ambitious for pupils.

Inspectors said that arrangements for safeguarding are effective.
