A quirky Worcester café will be closed on Sunday – and it’s for a reason that many of us will be able to relate to.

Café Afloat says it is shutting down for the day to allow staff to recover from a party the night before.

The café, which is based in a converted canal boat moored in Diglis Basin, informed customers of the upcoming closure on Facebook.

“Hi folks, very sorry but we will be closed this Sunday,” the café said in a post.

“Our lovely manager Will has just had a big birthday and he’s having a party on Saturday night and we honestly don’t think the team will be in a fit state to serve you on Sunday, so we’ve decided not to open.

“We think honesty is the best policy so for one Sunday only hangovers are to blame!”

Café Afloat opened in Basin Road, Diglis, 13 years ago and has proved popular in Worcester – with its bacon sandwiches, particularly in demand.

Customers have evidently been showing their appreciation by leaving positive reviews online, as the café was named in the top 10 per cent of restaurants in the world by Tripadvisor.

Café Afloat is a top business on TripAdvisor

The commendation was announced as part of TripAdvisor's Travellers' Choice 2022 and was posted on the business’s social media, thanking its customers and staff.

Dave Price, the owner of Café Afloat, said he is really happy with the elite TripAdvisor status.

He said: “I got an email from TripAdvisor saying we are in the top 10% of restaurants worldwide which I was really happy about.

"We try really hard to keep everyone happy and 99 per cent of our reviews are always positive. On the off chance that someone is unhappy, we always try to go the extra mile and rectify their experience.”

Café Afloat joins a number of other Worcestershire businesses that have closed temporarily in order to look after their staff.

In October, The Plough in Fish Street closed temporarily for “staff maintenance”, announcing: “Sorry folks… we’re knackered.”

And back in the summer, a number of county businesses including The Olive Branch bistro and wine bar, The Holt Fleet and Cross Keys pubs and Droitwich’s In Plaice fish bar closed to protect staff during a heatwave.
