AN UNLICENSED Hereford driver has been banned from the roads after he was caught driving while over the limit.

Matthew Gillespie appeared before magistrates in Hereford for sentencing in November after he was found guilty of one charge of drink-driving at an earlier hearing.

He had also previously admitted driving without insurance or a licence.

The court heard from prosecutor Mark Hambling that the 34-year-old had been caught behind the wheel of a Renault Clio on Belmont Road in Hereford while over the drink-drive limit on April 3.

An evidential breath test revealed he had 49 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35 microgrammes.

He had also been driving without a valid insurance policy in place and without a licence authorising him to drive a vehicle of that class on the same date, the court heard.

Gillespie, who is of Sherborne Close, Hereford, was disqualified from driving for 14 months and fined £180 for the offence, with magistrates offering him the opportunity to complete the drink-driver rehabilitation course, which will reduce his ban by 14 weeks if successfully completed.

He was also ordered to pay costs of £185.
