This breaktaking picture shows Ukrainian gymnast Ksusha Rusina apparently leaping over the Herefordshire countryside.

It was taken on the Malvern Hills, looking west across the county with the outline of Hay Bluff in the far distance.

Ksusha, aged 14, is from Kyiv but is currently living in Hanley Swan, Worcestershire with her mum Juliia (who took this photograph), sister Masha and grandparents Valerii and Liudmyla.

They have been placed for 12 months’ respite from the war as part of the Homes For Ukraine scheme. Her much-missed father, Sergii, remains to defend their country.

Ksusha has trained as a rhythmic gymnast since she was three years old.

In Ukraine she holds a Master of Sports, 10 trophies and more than 60 medals competing nationally and internationally.

Since moving to the region, she trains at the Worcester Rhythmic Gymnastics Club. Next month she will compete with them for the first time in the UK.

Along with several other Ukrainian students, she’s been warmly welcomed at Hanley High School where she has settled very quickly, studying for GCSEs. In Kyiv she also studied at music school as a pianist and singer.

The family had a long and complicated journey to the UK.

They fled Kyiv in February on the eve of the Russian invasion, initially for Italy where a gymnastic coach gave them temporary refuge. They completed their passage to Worcestershire by car and plane in May.

The HFU scheme has been running now for more than six months, successfully integrating families into the community.

Malvern Hills boasts one of the highest uptakes per head in the country with almost 300 placements.

Several displaced families are still arriving weekly and, with many more still awaiting placement, the scheme is always looking for new sponsors.
