A motorway crash happened after a person drove the wrong way down the motorway.

Three people had to be taken to hospital following a collision between multiple vehicles on the M5 late last night.

Now, Gloucestershire Constabulary has confirmed the crash, on the southbound carriageway near junction nine for Tewkesbury, happened after a motorist headed in the wrong direction.

A spokesperson for the force said: “Last night (Tuesday) we received calls to report a motorist was driving in the wrong direction on the M5 southbound carriageway after joining at junction 9, Tewkesbury.

“This happened shortly before midnight and officers responded.

"There was then a collision which happened between junction 8 and 9 and involved the vehicle that was driving the wrong way and two other vehicles."

The motorway was closed for several hours as a result of the crash, reopening at around 2.30am.

A spokesperson for West Midlands Ambulance Service said three people were injured.

A man and a woman from one of the cars were treated for injuries "not believed to be serious" before being taken to Worcestershire Royal Hospital in the same ambulance.

Meanwhile, a woman in another car was also treated for injuries not thought to be serious before being taken to the Alexandra Hospital in Redditch.

“The carriageway was subsequently closed while emergency services were in attendance and debris was cleared from the road," added the spokesperson for Gloucestershire's police force.

“No arrests have been made and enquiries are ongoing.”
