A COUNCILLOR has admitted driving at 100mph in his youth and says people like him are still doing it.

The admission came during a Ledbury Town Council meeting when members were talking about speeding through the town's main shopping street, The Homend.

Councillor Tony Bradford said that while he was walking to the meeting on August 4, a white BMW went racing past him near the Market House – well over the 30mph speed limit.

He said it was "deliberate racing" and said local police community support officers had been sent to Ross-on-Wye from Ledbury's station.

The council then entered into a debate over a speed camera or speed indicator devices (SIDs), those which show drivers how fast they are going, along The Homend.

The council's clerk Angela Price said she would raise the issue of police speed checks on The Homend with the local police station.

Coun Bradford said residents faced a similar problem in Staunton, a village just south of Ledbury in Gloucestershire.

He said drivers "could do 100mph" on the road through the village, the A417.

"When I was a teenager, I did, but that's 50 years ago," he said.

"There's still people like me trying to do it. They put these permanent ones (SIDs) in, we've got the signs, and it stopped it.

"We had a lot of fatal accidents on the A417, as you can probably remember, so I think we should pursue this and ask traffic management (committee) to write a letter as a start."

The council voted in favour of exploring the possibility of speed indicator devices and contacting the police about speed enforcement.
