The Met Office has updated its forecast about when Herefordshire can expect thunderstorms.

The heatwave is continuing today (Sunday). There may be shower later in some areas. The maximum temperature will be 35C, and while it will drop to 16C tonight, it will still be uncomfortable for sleeping.

Monday will stay warm, though cloudier than it has been. There will be some scattered thunderstorms. Maximum temperature 27C.

There will a greater chance of rain and thunderstorms on Tuesday.

An amber warning for extreme heat remains in place today.

According to the Met Office an amber warning means (among other things): 

  • Adverse health effects are likely to be experienced by those vulnerable to extreme heat
  • The wider population are likely to experience some adverse health effects including sunburn or heat exhaustion (dehydration, nausea, fatigue) and other heat related illnesses
  • Some changes in working practices and daily routines likely to be required

A yellow warning for thunderstorms comes into effect on Tuesday and Wednesday.

According to the Met Office a yellow warnings means:

  • There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds
  • Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services
  • Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost

Meanwhile, the Wye Float cavalcade of inflatables went ahead yesterday (Saturday) is the river at Hereford, which is flowing much lower than usually because we have had so little rainfall.
