FUEL prices in Hereford have nearly hit £2 per litre amid a warning for drivers.

BP, in The Straight Mile, Rotherwas, has remained one of the most expensive for some weeks.

Today (June 9) it increased its price of petrol to 193.9 per litre and diesel to 196.9 per litre. This is a rise of 15p for petrol in just over a week.

Hinton Service Station, in Ross Road, is the cheapest for petrol at 171.8p per litre, but this is a 7p rise from nine days ago.

Asda is the cheapest for diesel at 181.9p per litre, which is 4p more than it was on May 31.

Average fuel prices will hit £2 per litre this summer, motorists have been warned.

Your Money Matters

The news comes as the Hereford Times, and its publisher Newsquest, launches its #YourMoneyMatters campaign to try and combat the crisis.

At The Hereford Times, we’re making it our mission to look out for your cash, offering money-saving deals, competitions, giveaways and insightful stories from your community on the impact this cost of living crisis is having on our readers like you.

The worldwide energy crisis exacerbated by the Ukraine invasion, financial impact from the Covid pandemic, record inflation figures and a surge in the cost of goods, fuel and travel means we will all feel the pinch.

Through our newspaper, we want to do what we can to help make your cash go further because we know your money matters.

RAC fuel spokesman Simon Williams said: “With analysts predicting that oil will average 135 US dollars a barrel for the rest of this year, drivers need to brace themselves for average fuel prices rocketing to £2 a litre, which would mean a fill-up would rise to an unbelievable £110.”

Here is a list of the cheapest places to fill up the car in the city, according to petrol price per litre (correct as of Tuesday, May 31):

  1. Hinton Service Station, Ross Road: 171.8p unleaded, 181.8p diesel
  2. Asda, Belmont Road: 172.7p unleaded, 181.7p diesel
  3. Sainsbury’s, Barton Yard: 174.9p unleaded, 182.9p diesel
  4. Tesco, Belmont: 176.9p unleaded, 185.9p diesel
  5. Texaco, Ledbury Road: 181.9p unleaded, 182.9p diesel
  6. Co-op, Holmer Road: 181.9p unleaded, 186.9p diesel
  7. Esso, Ledbury Road: 184.9p unleaded, 184.9p diesel
  8. Texaco, Commercial Road: 185.9p unleaded, 189.9p diesel
  9. Shell, Whitecross Road: 191.9p unleaded, 191.9p diesel
  10. BP, The Straight Mile: 193.9p unleaded, 196.9p diesel

Mr Williams is urging the UK Government to make a change.

“The wholesale price of diesel is fast approaching 160p a litre which, when you add 7p retailer margin and 20 per cent VAT, would take the pump price over the £2 mark,” he said.

“We strongly urge the Government to take drastic action to help soften the impact for drivers from these never-before-seen pump prices.”
