A HEREFORDSHIRE building is set for a £1.56 million revamp, but the building has already gone through changes over the years.

Friends of Castle Green (FoCG) has asked Herefordshire Council if it can have planning permission to transform the historic Pavilion building.

While respecting its Georgian heritage, the plans submitted by the community interest company aim to create a modern, accessible space and iconic visitor attraction in the heart of the city.

Previous work saw the portico filled in, the Georgian roof removed and replaced with offices and a concreate block added to the front of the Georgian façade.

A photo of the pavilion, which can be found off Mill Street next to the river Wye, has led to some interesting insights into the building from members in our Facebook group We Grew Up in Hereford.

Member Simon Williams said he remembers a painting on the building when it was used for some years as an art college and a training centre for the local council, specifically for the painting and decorating courses.

Members of We Grew Up in Hereford believe the painting Mr Williams remembers was of a civil war memorial on the side of the building and was painted by students during a government training scheme with the art college.

Some even said they helped paint it themselves while they were a student.

The group now aims to restore the building, which is grade II listed and on medieval foundations, to reflect its historic past and re-create it for use as a sustainable community asset.

Currently, it provides a home for Hereford City’s Youth Canoe Club and projects including Livewire, which develops music opportunities for the 12-25 age group.

It is also open for hire and weekly yoga classes, speech and drama sessions, rehearsals, meetings, and parties take place regularly at the building.

Inside there are now three large rooms, a catering standard kitchen, changing facilities and toilets.
