THE bomb squad has confirmed it was called to a Herefordshire airfield after a potentially explosive device was found.

The Army said its explosives ordnance disposal (EOD) team was at Shobdon Airfield, between Leominster and Presteigne, along with officers from West Mercia Police

A 150-metre cordon was set up as the unknown item was assessed by experts but later lifted. It posed no risk to the public, police said.

An Army spokesperson said: "We can confirm an Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal team was called out to Shobdon Airfield, Leominster at the request of West Mercia Police.

"Upon inspection, the item was found to be non-hazardous and safely removed by bomb disposal experts.

"At no time was there any danger to local residents."

They added: “We always advise the public that if they inadvertently disturb what they believe to be live ordnance, they should contact their local police force as a matter of urgency.”

When asked about Saturday's incident, West Mercia Police said: "Police were called to Shobdon Airfield in Herefordshire on Saturday afternoon (March 26) following a report from a member of the public that they had discovered a potential explosive device.

"Officers attended and put a cordon in place.

"Explosives Ordnance Disposal (EOD) also attended and the item was found to be non-hazardous and safely removed by bomb disposal experts."

When asked, Shobdon Airfield said the incident was not on its airfield so was unable to comment.
