A HEREFORDSHIRE town could be getting its own CCTV amid concerns about assaults and anti-social behaviour.

A meeting of Bromyard and Winslow Town Council on January 24 heard that police are working to tackle issues in the town, but that they were keen to adopt the cameras, which they say have been successful in other areas.

PC Peter Browne said community protection notices have been issued to drinkers in the town and that police are working to resolve complaints of children door-knocking, but that there are only two officers stationed in the town.

"With the anti-social behaviour and assaults that have happened in the past, we are going to speak to whoever needs speaking to about CCTV for the town," PC Browne said.

"I think this warrants it and I think it would be beneficial to the town. There are grants available from the police and crime commissioner, and it has been successful in surrounding towns."

Leominster currently has six CCTV cameras, covering The Grange, Corn Square, West Street, High Street, and the bus station, while Ledbury has five, covering Church Street, High Street, and Upper Cross, and Ross-on-Wye has six, covering the Brookend Street, Broad Street, Crofts Lane, and High Street areas.

There are 23 council CCTV cameras in Hereford, covering Merton Meadow, Station Approach, Commercial Road, Newmarket Street, Widemarsh Street, High Town, King Street, the Cathedral Close, St Owen Street, St Martin's Street and The Lines.

At present, there are no council CCTV cameras in Bromyard.

PC Browne said he is also hoping that improvements can be made to the town's skate park, with the aim of providing more equipment for children and teenagers in the town.

"It gives kids a place to go and something to do," he said.
