A CARPENTRY business on the Herefordshire border has asked the council if it can build a new house to improve security.

Planners will consider the proposals after a public consultation, with the company saying the single-storey house would be built to the highest eco standards.

With solar panels, air-source heat pumps and a rainwater harvesting system, the new house would be a live-work unit for Hurst Carpentry Ltd, based at Rhos Farm in Kinnerton, north-west of Kington.

In planning documents submitted to Powys County Council by McCartneys, consultants said the existing commercial building was the hub of the business.

The new building would provide living space with an open plan kitchen, dining and lounge area with a bedroom and ensuite.

There would also be a dedicated office for the business with a disabled toilet and shower room, as well as a covered carport area.

It said the new unit, which would be occupied by Mr Hurst, would allow him to run the business efficiently and ensure the security of items on-site and within the building.

"This will enable a more efficient operation and help reduce travel movements in the local area," consultants said.

The walls would be clad in pine with a tin sheet roof, and if approved, internal floorspace would rise by 30.4 square metres.

Planners have set a deadline for a decision of February 8.
