A NEW headteacher has been appointed at a historic Hereford school.

Hereford Cathedral School headmaster Dr Michael Gray said delighted to announce that Helen Hoffmann has been appointed to succeed Chris Wright as Head of Hereford Cathedral Junior School.

Mrs Hoffmann is currently headteacher at Derwent Lodge, in Somerhill, Kent, prior to which she worked as head of juniors and then director of studies at Vinehall School, Robertsbridge.

A spokesperson for the school said Mrs Hoffmann has extensive school leadership experience from a career in both academic and pastoral roles.

She will take the helm at the 3-11 co-educational independent school in April 2022, the 124th year of its long history, and is looking forward to leading the school in its next chapter.

“I am thrilled to be the next head of Hereford Cathedral Junior School," Mrs Hoffman said.

"It is a great privilege to nurture young children, to see them grow and flourish in an outstanding educational setting. I am looking forward to building on the school's enviable history in the years ahead.”

Alongside her teaching career, Mrs Hoffmann has an eclectic range of interests and qualifications. She has learnt both French and upholstery to diploma level and is a skilled demonstration dancer for the Royal Scottish Country Dance Association.

Mrs Hoffmann will take over from James Debenham who has ably led the school as acting head since Mr Wright stepped down from his role in July 2021.

Dr Gray said: “I am absolutely delighted that Helen will be the next head of Hereford Cathedral Junior School and tremendously excited by the prospect of working with her.

"As a panel, we were unanimous in our decision, and both impressed and energised by Helen’s vision for the next chapter of the school. We very much look forward to welcoming Helen and her husband Keir to Hereford.”

Mrs Hoffmann will be visiting the school throughout the autumn and spring terms and is looking forward to getting to know the school community in preparation for the start of her new headship next year.
