NEW double yellow lines banning parking could soon be painted on two Hereford streets, if plans go ahead.

Herefordshire Council revealed that it wanted to paint the new lines in Belmont Avenue and Belmont Court, off the A465 Belmont Road.

There are already some double yellow lines painted on the roads, but the council said it wanted to add more to ensure safety.

Mairead Lane, the council's acting assistant director highways and transport, said the lines were needed to avoid danger and to improve the amenity of the area.

She said in the proposed order that the new lines should prevent cars parking opposite one another on both sides of the road, causing an obstruction.

It would also mean access is maintained for emergency services and bin lorries.

She added that it would stop vehicles parking too close to junctions, obscuring visibility. The lines on Belmont Avenue would be painted east of the Belmont Court junction.

While there were some exemptions to parking on double yellow lines, anyone ignoring the new rules could be fined.

A date has not yet been given for the new traffic order, if approved, coming into force.
