DRIVERS in a town on the Herefordshire border are being urged to slow down to keep children, as well as the elderly and disabled, safe.

Powys County Council Gareth Ratcliffe, who represents Hay-on-Wye, said he had growing concerns about speeding in the border town.

He had hoped that the town could already have a 20mph speed limit, down from 30mph, but it would have to wait until next year.

Coun Ratcliffe, a Welsh Liberal Democrat, said despite applying for Hay-on-Wye to be one of the eight pilot areas for 20mph speed limits in town centres, it missed out.

The national rollout though is still planned by 2023, he said.

"Sadly there are still issues, and luckily no one has been hurt," Coun Ratcliffe, the vice chair of Powys County Council said in a Facebook post.

"The reason for this post is to ask that we all start and make the conscious decision to drive a little slower now and not wait until it becomes law."

He said the 20's plenty campaign is about making people make the decision to drive slower in built-up areas.

"We can all play our part in keeping the streets a little bit safer for our children, elderly and disabled by playing our role and thinking about our speed," he added.

"I have a few 20 is plenty bin stickers coming and have also designed a poster if anyone would like one for their window."
