A ROAD in a Herefordshire town will be closed next week as work is carried out to prevent rockfalls.

People were warned to stay away from the area of Wilton Road, in Ross-on-Wye, which had been coned off.

They were told to stay away for their own safety due to the risk of rockfalls.

Ross-on-Wye Town Council said work to install concrete barriers and fencing would start next week.

Herefordshire Council contractors Balfour Beatty Living Places would start the work 9am on Wednesday (October 13) and would finish by 5pm on Friday (October 15).

"Local residents and businesses will be receiving letters in the coming days to advise that the road will be closed temporarily whilst the installation works are carried out," the town council said.

The installation of the barriers and fencing will mean that the temporary traffic lights and lane closure will be removed, resulting in two-way traffic being able to use the road again.

But it will mean on-street parking will be suspended.

Traffic lights reduced Wilton Road to one lane on September 21 after the danger was discovered.
