A TOWN in Herefordshire could run out of space to bury people in two years, if extra land is not found.

Bromyard and Winslow Town Council said that if new land isn't found, it could only be able to offer space for cremated interments by 2023.

The council's burial committee called for sites to be recommended as it tried to avoid problems arising.

The issue of burial space was discussed at a committee meeting in April where it was decided to appeal for potential sites.

But in October, the council repeated its call.

OTHER NEWS:

"Bromyard and Winslow Town Council is seeking land within the parish for the creation of an additional public burial ground," a spokesperson said.

"With a limited number of new burial plots remaining, it is currently estimated that the cemetery will reach capacity within the next two to five years, after which, only cremated interments will be possible.

"We would welcome all local landowners, with suitable land within the town’s boundary, to get in touch with the town clerk to register your interest and discuss this further."

The remaining spaces, expected to last between two and five years, came after investigations were carried out at the cemetery, in Stourport Road.

OTHER NEWS:

In April, councillors heard ground penetration radar survey and several test digs took place.

The purpose was to investigate if land, near the new cremation area, was suitable for new burial plots.

"The results of the test digs indicate that there is space to create several new rows of graves on either side of the new cremation area," minutes of the April 7 said.

"These will most likely have to be single plots due to depths of between 4ft and 5ft before hitting the bedrock below.

"Members noted that with the new single plots the cemetery could provide burials for approximately two years."

At that meeting, councillors also spoke of the difficulties in finding suitable land for a new burial site.
