AN ALCOHOLIC banned driver crashed into a roundabout on a busy Herefordshire road while more than four times the limit.

Adam Thomas Brown admitted drink-driving when he appeared before magistrates in Hereford.

The 35-year-old was driving on the A449 Leadon Way at Ledbury when he was involved in a crash at 7pm on June 30, prosecutor Shafquat Reaz said.

Brown was spoken to by police and was arrested after failing a roadside breath test.

He was taken to hospital, where a blood test revealed he had 331 milligrammes of alcohol in 100 milligrammes of blood, four times the legal limit of 80.

The court heard Brown was subject to a driving ban at the time, but that he had already been sentenced for driving while disqualified at a previous hearing, receiving a 12-week prison sentence and a 60-month driving ban.

George Cousins, for Brown, said he had indeed been driving while drunk and disqualified and had crashed into a roundabout.

"He accepts he is an alcoholic and his previous convictions reflect that," Mr Cousins said.

"He was sentenced for the other offence while the police were waiting for his blood sample to come back and he was also in breach of a suspended sentence. He has since been released and is under probation.

"He says his prison sentence benefitted him as he could not drink and he got counselling. He has not had a drink since."

Brown, of Hill End, Castlemorton, was handed a further 48-month driving ban, to run concurrently to his current ban and fined £120. He must also pay costs of £135 and a £34 victim surcharge.
