FIREFIGHTERS have faced a "very difficult" task of tackling a wildfire in Herefordshire.

The fire in the open on Bringsty Common, near Bromyard, needed crews from three stations to bring it under control.

The Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service crews from Bromyard said the call came in at 5.30pm on Friday and they found around 50 tonnes of grass cuttings "well alight".

"These large tumps are very difficult to extinguish and require a lot of water plus hard work dragging it over," Bromyard fire station said, adding Leominster and Malvern crews were also there.

The crew left at 10pm, but needed to carry out a reinspection at 1am and several hot spots were found.

Using a hose reel jet these were extinguished, and a further reinspection at 6am confirmed that the fire was completely out.
