A Herefordshire town has won its 14th RHS Heart of England Britain in Bloom Gold Award.

Throughout the year a dedicated team of volunteers has been hard at work keeping Ledbury looking blooming magnificent.

But thoughts are already turning to next year’s efforts, with plans to add 32 sponsored tubs of flowers throughout the town.

Christina Vass, chair of the town’s In Bloom committee, said: “Winning Gold is a team effort and is much more than just a team of gardeners.

“Recognition must go to the town council who look after the stunning hanging baskets; the town traders, who water and help to look after the tubs along the High Street; Tesco, who gave us a grant to replace tubs, and everyone who has donated or litter-picked or sponsored and supported us.

“A huge thank-you to you all. We could not have done it without you.”

Due to the pandemic, the usual way of judging was somewhat different this year. It was based on three criteria of Horticulture, Community and Environment.

A portfolio — or diary — of the team’s efforts over the year was also submitted to give the judges an insight into all the hard work put in by the team.

The U3A’s Walled Gardeners group also entered the It’s Your Neighbourhood awards.

Their flower beds and efforts in the Walled Garden were recognised with an ‘Thriving’ commendation.

“This is a tremendous recognition of their hard work and commitment to looking after this part of Ledbury,” a statement from the bloomers said.

The town council was quick to congratulate the team.

Town Clerk Angela Price said: “Ledbury 'rose' to the occasion… again!

"Well done to all the volunteers at Ledbury in Bloom who work tirelessly to keep Ledbury looking wonderful — it has been appreciated by many, especially throughout the pandemic.

“And a big thank you to our groundsman for keeping the hanging baskets hydrated.”

Other nearby places to win a gold include Hereford, Ludlow, Leominster and Malvern.
