ROADWORKS on a Herefordshire main road are set to start on Monday and last for nearly four months.

Highways England, which manages trunk roads, said it was going to be carrying out essential work on the A40 in Ross-on-Wye between September 27 and January 21.

A spokesperson said resurfacing work was needed and the road markings would be repainted between the junction of the A40/A4137 and Wilton roundabout at Ross-on-Wye.

On top of this, they said there would be maintenance work carried out on the rockface to prevent rock falls or loose debris dropping directly onto the carriageway.

The four-month long works would be carried out in phases in a bid to minimise disruption as much as possible, but to ensure the safety of workers and drivers, some lane and road closures would be required.

National Highways assistant project manager Jasmine Maumi said: “We appreciate that roadworks can be frustrating but once this important work is completed drivers will benefit from a smoother and safer road surface, clearer markings and assured that action has been taken to tackle the risk of rocks or debris falling onto the carriageway.

“Drivers are advised to leave more time for journeys and avoid this area if possible during the closures.”

Work would take place from Monday to Friday, the spokesperson added, and would mostly be carried out through lane closures.

But they said the following full carriageway closures would be needed:

  • September 27 to October 9, 8pm to 6am: Full carriageway closure of the A40 eastbound from the junction of the A40/A4137 and Wilton roundabout, including inner ring road closure of the roundabout
  • October 11 to October 16, 8pm to 6am: Full closure of the A49 from Bannuttree Lane to Wilton roundabout, including one lane closed on A40 eastbound and westbound. Partial outer ring closure at Wilton roundabout

Highways England said there would be no restrictions on the road between Thursday, December 23 and Tuesday, January 4.
