I take issue with comments made by Eligijus Rebbeck.

READ MORE: Hereford needs cycle paths like the Dutch have

He says people all over Hereford love to moan about the need for a bypass. Let me tell him it is our right as citizens of Hereford to moan about the need for a bypass.

He wants proper cycling routes and paths like the Dutch to reduce congestion and pollution.

He further says if Hereford had proper ways to get round the city there would be fewer cars, fewer deaths and injuries to cyclists from ignorant drivers.

I think he is confused, would not a bypass be a proper way to achieve this? Hereford is not full of ignorant drivers but does have a high number of ignorant cyclists whose behaviour is hazardous for pedestrians.

Roads are partially financed through general taxation including taxes levied on motorists.

Cyclists should also contribute through purchase of compulsory permits allowing them to use cycle lanes which share roads and highways used by motorists.

There should also be a fee to take compulsory competence tests before being allowed on the public highway and heavy fines for breaking the law by riding on the footway or against the traffic flow in one way streets.
