A VILLAGE store run by a married couple with less than four years' retail experience has been named the best in the UK.

Shobdon PO & Stores is the best independent shop in the country, while its owners, Martin and Aileen Lovell, are the UK's most exceptional independent retailers.

The pair swept the board at the Independent Achievers Academy Awards (IAA) awards ceremony in London, and claimed top prize with the Overall Best Shop award.

They also won the technology section, finished runners-up in three other categories, and were praised by judges for their commitment and passion to the community.

Martin Lovell, previously a marketing director, took over the business in 2004 with wife and former nurse Aileen. Neither had any significant retail experience, yet Mr Lovell puts their success down to hard work, and a great team.

"We're absolutely delighted and I think it's fantastic achievement," said Mr Lovell.

"We've tried to create a quality environment for people to want to come back to. At the end of the day, you can sell anything to anyone but you've got to get them to come back.

"But we've also got great staff here, and without them we wouldn't have got anywhere - they're very dedicated."

Martin and Aileen may be the faces behind the counter, but they are also the brains behind the village website, www.shobdonvillage.co.uk The duo won the technology award for the quality of the website - which contains information about the shop, local events and listings - and its placing within the community.

Nick Shanagher, managing director of event organisers, Newtrade Publishing, praised the Lovell for their hard work.

"These retailers provide inspiration to all of us in the independent trade," said Mr Shanagher.
