AS cold weather hits the county, drivers are being reminded to keep their cars in good condition or risk a serious collision.

Police figures show that a quarter of vehicles stopped and checked by officers have condition defects, such as worn tyres and broken lights. A number of injuries in accidents are caused by vehicle faults.

If police stop a vehicle and find it is not roadworthy the driver could face a £30 fixed penalty notice or prosecution.

West Mercia's casualty reduction manager, Sgt John Roberts, said: "Now the wintry weather is upon us it is vital that motorists take the time to check vehicles and ensure they are in a roadworthy condition.

"Drivers should get into the habit of checking their vehicles, regardless of how old their vehicles are."

Police are reminding drivers to take particular care when driving in snowy or icy conditions. Some of their top tips for winter driving are: Check the media for weather forecasts and listen to radio for travel information.

Tell someone at your destination what time you expect to arrive.

Equip yourself with warm clothes, food, boots, and a torch, scraper and de-icer. A spade is also useful for snowy conditions.

If you get into trouble on the motorway, it's best to use a roadside emergency telephone as breakdown and emergency services will be able to locate you easily.

If you need to use a mobile phone make sure you know your location from the numbers on the marker posts on the hard shoulder.

Abandoned vehicles can hold up snowploughs and rescue vehicles. To ensure the road is not blocked unnecessarily, stay with your vehicle until help arrives.

If you need to leave your vehicle to get help, make sure other drivers can see you.

Hail, snow, rain and fog reduce visibility so use dipped headlights and reduce your speed.

Remember it takes longer to stop on an icey or slushy road so drive slowly and allow more room for braking.

In icy conditions, manoeuvre, brake and accelerate gently.

Use the highest gear possible to avoid wheel spin.

Keep a safe distance from gritting vehicles and snow ploughs and do not attempt to overtake.
