A HEREFORDSHIRE man has been banned from the roads after he was 'pressured' to drink-drive by his son.

Gareth Charles Philpotts admitted drink-driving when he appeared before magistrates in Hereford.

Police were informed that Philpotts had got behind the wheel of a Volkswagen Transporter on the B4348 near Allensmore after drinking alcohol at around 7pm on August 10, prosecutor Shafquat Reaz said.

Philpotts was found and asked to provide a breath sample, which returned a positive result.

An evidential test in custody revealed he had 94 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.

George Cousins, for Philpotts, said the 67-year-old had been completely honest about his drinking that afternoon when spoken to by police.

"He went home after drinking while out and drank some more there before being called by his son who owns a pub and who put pressure on him to drive over with some items he needed.

"He got stopped and he is here today. He has been driving for 50 years and this is the first time he has appeared in court."

Philpotts, of Bull Farm Cottages, Letton, was disqualified from driving for 24 months and fined £500. He must also pay costs of £135 and a £50 victim surcharge.
