A DRUNKEN soldier abused police after he was told to leave a Hereford pub.

Cory Gammage admitted one count of drunk and disorderly behaviour when he appeared before magistrates in Hereford.

The 28-year-old soldier was seen by police outside The Kerry in Hereford's Commercial Street in the early hours of August 8, prosecutor Elizabeth Blacklock said.

Gammage, who was slurring his words and unsteady on his feet, had been told to leave the city centre pub because he was too drunk, but despite being held up by friends who were trying to persude him to go home, was refusing to leave.

Officers approached and arranged a taxi for Gammage, but he refused to tell the driver where he lived, becoming abusive towards police.

He was arrested after swearing at officers, who said he was becoming aggressive and obstructive.

Speaking on his own behalf, Gammage, who has previous convictions for assault and drunk and disorderly behaviour in 2017 and 2018, said he regretted his behaviour that night.

"I do not remember much of the night," the serving infantryman said.

"I am sorry for my behaviour and I have not drunk much since."

He said the army would be able to provide him with help to tackle his drinking.

Gammage, of Linnet Close, Belmont, was fined £134 and ordered to pay costs of £135 and a £34 victim surcharge.
